Understanding BMI
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your height and weight to estimate body fat. It's used worldwide as a screening tool to identify potential weight-related health issues in adults.
BMI Categories
Underweight
BMI below 18.5 - May indicate nutritional deficiency or other health issues.
Normal Weight
BMI 18.5-24.9 - Associated with the lowest health risks.
Overweight
BMI 25-29.9 - Increased risk for various health conditions.
Obese
BMI 30+ - Significantly elevated health risks requiring attention.
Limitations of BMI
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes, bodybuilders, and people with high muscle mass may be classified as overweight or obese despite having low body fat. Similarly, older adults who have lost muscle mass may have a normal BMI but carry excess fat. For a complete picture, consider combining BMI with other measurements like body fat percentage, waist circumference, or DEXA scans.
